Nasal polyps are soft growths which normally occur in both nostrils.
They are not usually painful or serious but can keep growing and block your nose if left untreated. There is not an exact reason why some people get nasal polyps, but they may be related to an allergy or infection.
The symptoms of nasal polyps include:
Sometimes nasal polyps can block your sinuses, in which case you may also have symptoms of sinusitis.
Treatment for nasal polyps usually consists of a corticosteroid as this helps reduce inflammation and swelling within the nostrils.
The steroid treatment may be in the form of drops or a spray that are administered directly into the nose. Steroid drops or sprays are usually needed to be used long-term to stop the polyps returning.
Steroid tablets may be used in some cases. Surgery to remove the nasal polyps might be suggested for certain patients if there is no sign of improvement from steroid treatment.
